I have a little collection of desktop flags for all of the countries I’ve visited. I just order a Ukrainian flag. Not because I’ve been there or because I’m going anytime soon, but rather to show a little solidarity. I also dug out an old Canadian flag lapel pin to wear when I’m in Iceland and Europe later this spring. I don’t want the locals to automatically assume I’m an American.
Back in 2017, when we were touring the Jameson distillery in Dublin, the guide invited everyone to say where they were from. When our turn came around, I said we were from the States, but “we’re pretending to be Canadian.” Everyone laughed. Everyone got the joke. It’s not so funny a second time around.
